![]() That and the plot has tons of philosophical depth to validate tons of different options. POE is definitely better on choice and consequence though, mostly the first one. Problem is that game is very difficult to get into for a newbie unless you're already intimately familiar with Pathfinder 1E the tabletop game. The second that main menu opens you think you're playing Dragon Age because Kingmaker's main theme is right out of there. If you want something closer to Dragon Age: Origins in feel, honestly I recommend Pathfinder Kingmaker more. The companions are all very interesting, complex stories (though words cannot express how much I dislike the “complexity” of Durance but this is a very unpopular opinion), but IMO they don’t hit the feeling of friendship and trust (except maybe Eder) that BioWare has - because they’re not really trying to do that. (Not that I’m a loner, but rather that friendships irl will always have a level of stress and anxiety that I’ll do something wrong, or we’ll grow apart over time, and such.) That’s the fantasy that I think Sawyer misses. But honestly, when I see companions as fulfilling fantasies, for me it’s the fantasy of building a group of friends and relationships - both romantic and non - with people who grow to like and trust me. In the post I saw, he mentioned that he grew up seeing CRPGs as an opportunity to fulfill “murderhobo fantasies” and is confused by people who see them as opportunities to fulfill sexual fantasies, which I think says as much about him as it does the people he’s judging for sexual fantasies lol. ![]() This lends these games a lot more replay value because you experience the same story, but not always the same outcomes, from many different points of view. (Or if that is too nebulous, think of how Fallout 3/4 focuses on you as the Vault Dweller coming out into the world whereas New Vegas recognizes you as just another occupant in the world.) The best example of this difference is how Baldur's Gate focuses on your personal story whereas Pillars focuses on telling you the story of the Dyrwood lands and your role in that much larger story. The key difference between Obsidian's and BioWare's writing is that they write the story around characters and their worlds first, then let you put yourself as a character in their world BioWare mainly writes the story around you and how you shape the world. Not to say that these games lack choices-far from it-but it's different kind of player-driven experience. You might find this series less player focused compared to the games you've mentioned.
